We are seeking a Writer to be an integral part of the Upworthy editorial team. At Upworthy, our original stories are some of the most widely shared across social media. We specialize in elevating the most important stories of the day and filtering them through the lens of Upworthy’s brand voice in a way that makes them accessible and interesting to our audience. The perfect candidate will have experience creating their own audience on social media platforms or a record of exceptional storytelling to help us grow our audience even further. We are open to writers who have a demonstrated experience in one of our core audience areas or the adaptability to cover the broad array of subjects that make up Upworthy’s areas of coverage.

This position will launch as a 3-month full-time/contract role with the opportunity to extend.

*Key Responsibilities*
* Write 5-7 trending news stories per week

* Monitor trends in pop culture, politics, mental health and other leading Upworthy areas of interest and pitch stories on a daily basis

* Work with the Editor-in-Chief on developing monthly original features and interviews

* Peer edit stories written by other writers before publication

* Additional responsibilities as assigned by editors

*Required Qualifications*
* Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of professional journalism experience

* A broad interest in and understanding of news events, political landscapes, and social and cultural issues

* A fundamental understanding of social media, meme and internet culture

* Ability to write with wit and humor, understanding the Upworthy voice

* Organized with strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment

* Excellent communication skills and strong collaboration skills

* Ability to adapt, be resourceful, and operate during moments of ambiguity

* High integrity and accountability in taking primary responsibility for a diverse number of projects and to complete them in a timely manner with limited supervision

* High emotional intelligence and strong interpersonal skills

* Desire to do excellent work and have fun doing it

* Familiarity and comfort with Google Suite (Doc, Slides, Sheets, Gmail, etc.), Google Analytics, Asana

* Ability to work independently and meet daily deadlines

* Strong and fast-paced writing skills

* Understanding of basic editing standards

* Understanding of, or willingness to learn, Upworthy’s voice and approach to storytelling

* Understanding of, or willingness to learn, content publishing in CMS.

* Understanding of or an openness to learning how we optimize our stories across social media

*Bonus if you have…*
* Experience with branded content

* Interest and/or experience in editing

Job Types: Full-time, Contract

Pay: $900.00 - $1,000.00 per week

* Monday to Friday

All employees are currently remote. We will be following CDC guidelines regarding re-opening and returning to in-person work.
