This position is with the Office of Environmental and Energy Programs (OEEP), the department that leads Agency sustainability policy, target-setting, reporting, and project/program development and implementation. The Port Authority was the first US transportation agency to align with the Paris Climate Agreement, and this position will play an instrumental role in helping the Agency achieve its climate action ambitions. The Environmental Sustainability Manager (ESM) will support OEEP in setting and overseeing agency-wide environmental strategy, reporting and communication on sustainability, and implementing related sustainability programs. In particular, the ESM will be focused on efforts to embed environmental sustainability into the culture, systems and processes of the Agency, including initiatives around sustainability materiality and program design, and helping design and oversee actions focused on greenhouse gas emission mitigation, including managing the Agency’s greenhouse gas inventory.
Another focus will be managing internal and external environmental sustainability communications including sustainability/climate disclosure. Other strategic programs could include finalization and implementation of the Agency Climate Action Plan, frameworks to institutionalize climate action in business operations and capital allocation, advancing development of an Agency Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) platform, green procurement, green leasing, and tracking of non-physical climate risks.
Reporting to the Deputy Director of OEEP, the ESM will have access to senior leadership and collaboration with the Director of the department, and will be collaborating extensively with other program managers within OEEP and across the Agency. The ESM will also be the key point of contact for consultants managing the Greenhouse Gas inventory and the Climate Action Planning process. The ESM will have the capability of communicating to the public and all levels of the Agency from staff to executive leadership.
Agency-wide sustainability strategy
Advance and finalize the Agency’s Climate Action Plan, with support from consultants
Oversee the implementation of the Climate Action Plan
Coordinate with colleagues at OEEP and counterparts in line departments to assist with a wide range of clean energy and other sustainability initiatives (e.g., resource conservation and greening of supply chain)
Lead initiatives to embed sustainability and aspects of broader ESG issues into the culture, policies, systems and processes of the organization
Develop a strong understanding of management system design, implementation and integration with other departments and their systems
Support monitoring and evaluation initiatives for material sustainability topics
Oversee staff and consultants managing the annual greenhouse gas inventory and climate action quantification on behalf of the agency, in collaboration with our Engineering team
Climate change communication and disclosure
Lead sustainability communications on behalf of OEEP focusing in areas such as public disclosures (voluntary and mandatory), marketing, and event
Understand sustainability related risks, risk reporting, risk controls and program design around risk reduction
Keep abreast of sustainability market trends such as the impact of ESG and climate change on capital markets, sustainability linked bonds
Articulate clearly the impacts, opportunities and risks associated with climate actions and risks to senior leadership.
Collaborate with other departments to ensure the Port Authority is taking advantage of opportunities and protecting the agency from any future risks.
Develop internal staff training initiatives and leadership briefings
Lead initiatives around internal carbon pricing and carbon fees
This position provides an excellent opportunity for an ambitious, flexible, and creative candidate to interface with various Port Authority departments and external stakeholders to advance the Agency’s sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction goals.
Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, business, engineering, policy or management from an accredited college or university with aptitude in strategy, policy, communications, data analytics and reporting
Master’s or other graduate degree in similar fields preferred
Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in sustainability/ESG consulting, sustainability management for private sector organizations or non-profit focused on ESG/climate action
Experience in any or all of the areas of aviation, maritime ports, public and private transportation, and transportation infrastructure
Experience with various clean energy solutions such as renewables, energy efficiency, electric vehicles, clean fuels.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to make concise presentations to a variety of audiences
Demonstrated people management skills
Experience in climate action and sustainability planning processes
Other strategic programs (experience in any of the below topics will be viewed favorably)
In addition to the above core functions, the ESM would investigate the potential of the following programs and develop and implement the most promising ones:
Green leasing policies
Green bonds (in close collaboration with Agency Finance groups)
Valuing carbon emissions
Green economy and green jobs
Embodied carbon and circularity in construction
Air quality and other community impacts
