Volunteer Coordinator, Community Aide (NCS) - Baltimore City Recreation and Parks

Class Description
This position will report directly to the Chief of Community Engagement & Strategic Partnerships Division. The Volunteer Project Coordinator is responsible for recruiting volunteers, working with department staff to design and conduct volunteer workdays in the parks, data collection and reporting. The Volunteer Project Coordinator works closely with local businesses, universities, schools, and other organizations to plan and implement meaningful volunteer projects and, at times, team building activities.
The ideal candidate will serve as an advocate for park stewardship, proactively promoting the important role that parks play in an urban environment. The successful candidate must demonstrate his/her ability to engage the public and communicate effectively with diverse groups. He/she must have solid customer service, public speaking skills and display enthusiasm.
This is a 50% outdoor position, does require regular physical activity including the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. on occasion. This is a 36.67 hour per week temporary position, with some evening and regular weekend work required.
Essential Functions
- Develop a volunteer program for BCRP.
- Meet with corporate, university, local school, or other organization representatives to discuss volunteer project opportunities with Recreation and Parks.
- Work with BCRP staff to develop scope of work for volunteer projects.
- Organize and implement group volunteer projects, including reserving of park space, ordering portable toilets, assembling, and delivering required tools and supplies, coordinating additional volunteer supervision if needed, leading day of project activities, clean up, and return tools and supplies.
- Sending appropriate thank you correspondence.
- Keeping detailed project spreadsheet information updated. Maintain email list of volunteers.
- Tallying monthly volunteer hours for the department.
- Write reports, develop presentations.
- Coordinate annual volunteer appreciation activities or events.
- Recruit volunteers for Recreation and Parks events and programs.
Education And Experience Requirements
EDUCATION: Completion of two years at an accredited college or university.
AND
EXPERIENCE: Have two years’ experience in program development, coordination, or management and knowledge of landscaping or basic construction/building repair is a plus.
Position Requirements
- Must be available to work evenings and weekends.
- Must be in sufficient physical condition to perform Volunteer Project Coordinator duties.
- Must possess the ability to lift, or cause to be lifted, objects weighing 50 pounds occasionally, 25 pounds frequently.
- Must possess the ability to deal with the public in a courteous manner, use independent judgment in certain situations, lead others in work related activities, think and act quickly in an emergency.
- Must be willing to work during normal seasonal weather conditions.
- Must be able to pass a drug and alcohol test and physical examination.
- Must be at least 21 years of age and have reliable transportation – a valid noncommercial Class C motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
NOTE: Those eligible candidates who are under final consideration for appointment to positions in this class will be required to authorize the release of criminal conviction information.
