Scope: The Sierra Club seeks a strategic, collaborative, and equity-focused Senior Campaign. Representative to advance initiatives to end fossil fuel use in homes and buildings across California. In this position, the Senior Campaign Representative will join a statewide team that is working to address the climate crisis by moving California from dirty to clean energy. The Senior Campaign Representative is a central coordinator of building electrification campaigns. The Senior Campaign Representative plans and implements strategies in collaboration with internal departments and programs, as well as external partners. They develop state-based and regional campaign plans, drive execution, communicate priorities and benchmarks, provide leadership, promote participation, and report on campaign effectiveness. They represent Sierra Club to government officials, the media, business and community leaders, allies and other organizations, and the public.
Job activities include but are not limited to:
- Leading development of an overarching strategic plan for Sierra Club's building electrification work in California. Ensuring that building electrification campaigns are rooted in equity and justice, and coordinated with other national energy campaign priorities.
- Planning and supporting a full suite of campaigns to decarbonize the buildings sector in collaboration with Sierra Club's Campaigns, Environmental Law Program, Organizing Department, State and Local Chapters, Communications Department, Digital Strategies, capacities and programs, and volunteer leadership.
- Tracking local and state policy and regulatory proceedings in CA that are relevant to building electrification and identifying opportunities for engagement and intervention.
- In collaboration with state teams, engages key players in reducing climate and air pollution from buildings. Supporting and working with partners in frontline communities, labor, and elected and appointed decision makers to advance building electrification priorities and ensure that solutions serve the most vulnerable communities.
- Working with the national Building Electrification campaign team, the Communications Department, and Chapters on communications strategy, messaging, and advocacy materials to achieve local and state objectives. Supporting media outreach related to building electrification, including building a diverse bench of spokespeople to engage with the press.
- Applying equity, inclusion, and justice values to all campaign activities. Operationalizing the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing and Organizational Equity Values in all partnership and collaborative activity.
- Introducing creative ideas and approaches; fostering creativity among team members.
Heavier seasonal workloads may occur as a result of project deadlines, staff absences and vacancies, and during peak activity periods. Frequent weekend and/or evening work may be required. Valid driver's license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.
The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:
- Advanced Campaign Expertise: Substantial experience in the planning and implementation of campaigns, which includes how to leverage legislative / regulatory policy, organizing, communications, digital and legal strategies. Demonstrated understanding of and experience in how organized movements create change and accomplish policy objectives at local, state, and / or federal level. Track record of planning, implementing and evaluating advocacy campaigns, including the following:
- Strategic planning, managing a local or state policy or issue campaign
- Policy development and analysis
- Organizing and working with a volunteer base
- Working with attorneys and utilizing legal advocacy
- Lobbying decision makers and staff
- Media relations and strategic communications
- Working with senior level organizational, business, and political leaders
- Diverse Coalition Experience: Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse coalition partners. Experience and relationships with environmental justice, climate, labor, community-based organizations, health, housing rights, economic justice, and / or clean energy partners in CA.
- Excellent Communications Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills, public speaking and media presentation ability.
- Equity Analysis and Practice: Demonstrated understanding of equity, justice, and inclusion, and ability to effectively work and collaborate across differences. You are aware of your group identities and how they have shaped your life and experiences at work. You have an analysis of how racism and other forms of oppression in society impact relationships, systems and culture. You bring experience and skills for working effectively with colleagues across group identities and position/role. Familiarity with and commitment to incorporating principles of equity, inclusion, and justice into campaign processes and outcomes. Understanding of how power, privilege, and oppression manifest at the individual, interpersonal, and team levels.
The most successful candidates will also demonstrate the following experience, skills, and competencies
- Knowledge of environmental and energy issues, and either expertise or an ability to develop expertise in building electrification policy and issues
- Knowledge of the political, policy, and regulatory landscape in CA
- Experience working closely with organizers and volunteers
Compensation and Benefits
The salary for this position is $73,295.
This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and Progressive Workers Union.

This is a category 3, exempt, represented position.
