Within LBRE, the Department of Sustainability and Energy Management (SEM) brings an integrated and deliberate focus to campus sustainability. The department works to advance sustainability in campus operations, from energy and water management to conservation programs and community behavior. SEM develops strategic, long-term goals to support the university’s commitment to reduce Stanford’s environmental impact. Stanford is already an internationally recognized sustainability leader and exciting work is underway in decarbonization, waste reduction, climate resilience, digitization, and community engagement.
The Office of Sustainability is a key component of SEM and develops and drives many of the initiatives university wide. The Director leads the office and a staff of 5-7 professionals, leading and collaborating across university faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders to advance sustainability within LBRE and SEM and across Stanford. Stanford seeks to fill this Director role with an experienced sustainability professional. This position reports to the Executive Director, Sustainability and Energy Management.
Identify, analyze, prioritize, develop, and implement a wide range of strategic university-wide sustainability programs by integrating and/or expanding complementary academic, research, operations, and student sustainability activities.
- Identify, analyze, prioritize, develop, and implement a wide range of sustainability programs while pursuing continuous improvement to existing programs and developing new programs as required.
- Provide vision and support for development of sustainability programs managed by other departments such as green purchasing, sustainable dining practices, and recycling.
- Cultivate relationships and complement activities with faculty, academic departments, and institutes engaged in the sustainability field.
- Collaborate in long-term planning in the topics of sustainable energy, water, waste, transportation, and procurement, incorporating knowledge from the field and feedback from the campus programs.
- Define activities of assigned groups, assess staffing needs, commit resources, evaluate performance, and develop staff. Provide support to other departments’ sustainability staff. Develop and manage budgets for assigned area(s).
- Advance Stanford’s participation in the external community and sustainability industry by cultivating relationships with key professionals and organizations.
- Serve as a key university spokesperson on sustainability, media and public relations concerns; collaboratively coordinate the university's community and media relations efforts.

Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree and five years of experience in sustainability program management, or combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Ability to effectively identify, analyze, prioritize, develop, and implement a wide range of sustainability programs.
- Polished verbal and written communications skills, including public speaking and formal presentations.
- Team management and supervisory skills, including delegation and accountability, staff recruitment and development, budgeting and budget management, and internal and external reporting.
- Project management skills, including reliable scopes of work, timelines, and cost estimates for sustainability projects.
- Adept at understanding and communicating sustainability principles to others and ability to integrate those principles into campus operations.
- Capability to diplomatically bridge the gap between sustainability idealists and pragmatists to motivate and align diverse interests to advance sustainability on the campus; ability to build consensus among diverse interest groups.
Certifications And Licenses
- Frequently sitting, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
- Occasionally stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 11-20 pounds.
- Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
