Position Overview

The Office of Sustainability is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Sustainability Partnerships and Events Coordinator for approximately 2 months.

Comprising a campus community of more than 35,000 students, faculty and staff, the University of Calgary has set ambitious goals for excellence in research, scholarship, teaching, innovative thought, and the student experience. The university is committed to excellence, innovation and leadership in sustainability and is a recognized leader in sustainability among Canadian post-secondary-education institutions.

Reporting to the Manager, Sustainability Partnerships & Engagement, the Partnerships and Events Coordinator promotes UCalgary as a resource hub for sustainability research and learning through sustainability focused events and workshops. Programs are delivered with cross-sectoral representation including subject matter experts from academia, government and non-government organizations, industry and the community members. Revenue generation opportunities are also collaboratively pursued with partner organizations.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Coordinate the planning and implementation of internal and external high-impact events.

Write and prepare event plans with measurable objectives, established themes, and key messages which align with departmental and institutional priorities.

Source and negotiate services with vendors (e.g., Entertainment, AV, etc.), ensuring quality and value while remaining within budget guidelines.

Coordinate staff and volunteer support for events as required.s

Liaise with event venue staff from initial planning stages to event day set-up and take-down.

Enhance relationships with existing partners and develop new partnerships within the community.

Leverage existing relationships and identify shared benefit opportunities with new and existing partners in areas such as experiential learning, funding and event opportunities.

Help to grow the University's reputation in sustainability through the development of cutting-edge content and events, and by showcasing UCalgary sustainability leaders to our community and the world.

Stimulate community discussion on sustainability topics including the UN Sustainable Development Goals through the development of thought-provoking events showcasing diverse perspectives.

Develop interesting, topic-based sustainability events (in collaboration with other campus units and faculties such as the Hunter Hub, and Leadership and Student Engagement) such as event series, hackathons and experiential learning events.

Qualifications / Requirements:

The successful candidate will have an undergraduate degree in business, communications, education or related field and is passionate about sustainability.

A minimum of three years of experience in managing successful events and related external community engagement (or similar) required.

An interest in and familiarity with sustainability concepts is required. Related experience (professional or volunteer) required.

Superior organizational skills required. Demonstrated project planning skills and experience successfully running impactful, high quality, multi-stakeholder events and initiatives.

Excellent interpersonal communication, writing and relationship management skills, and the ability to engage a diverse audience with confidence in speaking in public.

Must possess strong organizational and time management skills, and the ability to support multiple projects of various types at different stages with an emphasis on accuracy and meeting milestones and deadlines.

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a team member and nurture positive working relationships with various community partners is required.

Ability to work independently with some supervision, exercising tact, sound judgment and exceptional decision-making skills.

Demonstrated analytical and project management skills. Exceptional working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite with an ability to develop high-quality documents and presentations is required. Must have an aptitude to quickly become proficient with new digital tools and software programs. Experience in grant writing and social media an asset.

Knowledge and understanding of University plans and policies, as well as structure, governance, and decision-making processes is an asset.
